The best way to keep your word is never to give it.
Not long ago, in a chapel in Vegas, I swore to love Karissa for the rest of my days. But nobody's promised an infinite number of tomorrows. Nobody's promised forever. Sometimes, all we have left is today.
Seize the day.
It should've been over, we should've been happy, but people are making it hard for me to live in peace. I've got so much blood on my hands they'll never be clean, and somebody out there seems to want me to pay for it. Happily Ever After always comes at a cost, one any real man would be willing to pay. But that doesn't mean I'm just going to roll over and accept these consequences.
Because when it comes to the woman I love? The life I've fought for?
Nobody is safe.

When I got a surprise email last month with the news that Naz was on his way, I was ecstatic. J.M. Darhower is an auto buy author for me anyway, I would read what ever she gave me, but Naz? Naz is special. I fell in love with him, and his story had me hooked right at the very beginning, with Monster In His Eyes almost 2 years ago. Then came Torture To His Soul which was even better because we actually got to read that one from his point of view, and to be in Naz’s head was heaven! In Target On Our Backs, the story is told from both viewpoints which was even better!
This book starts off not too long after the end of TTS. Naz and Karissa are newly-weds, trying to settle into married life. After his Boss (Ray) was killed in book 2, I thought that was the end of Naz’s involvement in the business. He was never sworn in, he wasn’t a made man and his only promise to Ray had been kept. He had taken his revenge, and he was finally done. Except it’s not that easy when you’ve spent your whole adult life as the enforcer for one of the big bosses in New York. Your name carries weight, and their are enemies a plenty just waiting to take their shot. Had Naz been a single man, maybe he would have accepted his fate, but now he has Karissa and the chance of a new beginning.
I was impressed with Karissa and how she embraced her role as the new Mrs Vitale, I thought she kicked ass! She certainly put the detective in his place, and I loved her attempts to get to know Naz’s father and bring the two of them together. I hoped his father would start to thaw towards Naz, and see that he was trying to be a better man for his new wife. I loved how Naz would just randomly turn up at the bakery even though his father wasn’t very welcoming, and try and initiate some dialogue between them. I thought it was sad that their relationship had been destroyed all those years ago, and I think maybe Naz missed the guidance and wise words he was finally ready to hear.
While Karissa struggles to decide which path to take at college, Naz has even bigger problems trying to find out who’s after him. There’s a new Boss in town, ready to take over Ray’s territory and Naz is determined to do whatever it takes to keep Karissa safe. He’s on his own and doesn’t know who he can trust. Even a familiar face from his past brings suspicion and mistrust. Sometimes it’s a case of better the devil you know, or keep your friends close and your enemies even closer!
Lorenzo was a welcome addition to this story, and I would love to read more from him. His interactions with Naz had me chuckling away more than once. If you’re reading this Ms Darhower, please please please can I have more Lorenzo? His back story, or his story after this book, I’m not fussy 😉
This was an action packed, thrilling conclusion to the series, the story had me on the edge of my seat throughout. The thing with J.M. Darhowers books is I can’t get enough of them, I always want more! I get so absorbed in the story, the writing is impeccable, the characters are well developed and it’s impossible not to get carried away.
