The electrifying sequel to Sempre! This is a story about loyalty and love. It is a story about finding redemption— even when all seems lost.
Swearing allegiance to the Mafia in order to save Haven Antonelli—the girl he loves—forces Carmine De Marco to make the ultimate sacrifice. Sent to Chicago to work for La Cosa Nostra, he refuses to place Haven in harm’s way by taking her with him. She deserves a shot at a normal life. But as he becomes more and more immersed in a world of terrible crimes, he realizes that surviving without her may be more than he is able to bear. . . .
Stunned and hurt that Carmine has left her, Haven must now learn to make her way in the world without him. Her heart aches with the loss, but for the first time, she’s making her own choices and accomplishing dreams she never thought were within her reach. The past, however, is not done with either her or Carmine. As Haven discovers dark secrets about the family who enslaved her and her mother, and why she matters so much in this web of lies, she realizes what terrible pain may still lie in wait for her and the boy she loves. And what they must suffer to find redemption. . . .

The Hot Bed are in Chicago today on their virtual road trip around the States, so keeping with the theme, I thought I’d take this opportunity to post my review of Sempre: Redemption, which is the second book in the Forever series by J.M. Darhower.
*WARNING! As this is the second book, there may be spoilers in this review if you haven’t read Sempre yet*
I don’t know why I put off reading this for so long! I loved Sempre when I read it last early last year, and when it ended I was worried for what the future would hold for Carmine and Haven after he had initiated into The Family.
I really felt for the two of them in this book. Haven is finally free, free to make her own decisions, free to live her life as she chooses, but at what cost? In securing her freedom, Carmine lost his. Now he is committed to a life he wasn’t ready for, wasn’t ready to cope with, and it may just end up being his undoing. I hoped there would be a way out for him, but then again, I didn’t. Because the only way he would escape the clutches of La Cosa Nostra would be through death. He is on a downward spiral and things aren’t looking good for him. In the past his father had always bailed him out of trouble but now Vincent De Marco was unable to protect his son.
I felt for Vincent in this book too. He had fought for so long to keep his son away from the life he had grown up in, but now he was powerless. I loved how he looked out for Haven though, and how he was determined to put right the wrongs in his life.
The real surprise for me though was Corrado. In Sempre I didn’t really get to know Corrado Moretti, I thought him to be a cold-hearted monster, however in this book he really shone for me. I loved him, for me he was the unsung hero in Carmine and Havens story. He might give the impression that he’s cold, heartless, and indifferent to everyone but there are glimpses of a heart lurking somewhere beneath his cold exterior. I loved that I couldn’t second guess him, I never knew what he was going to say or do next, he was so unpredictable and I thought he really made this story.
I loved the end, how it all came together and the epilogue was perfect, but I will miss the characters. I would love to read more of Corrado’s story, maybe from a younger Corrado, about how he worked his way up the chain of command… *hint hint*
I just love JM’s writing style, it’s so easy to get lost in the pages of her books. You start off reading a few chapters and then before you know it a few hours have passed and your life has been taken over by the characters in the story. The suspense has your heart pounding, the action has you turning the pages in a frenzy and then the romance has you swooning. And I love every minute of it!
