A day in the life of Niecey Roy

How my day begins…

So I downloaded this Sleep Cycle app, and it’s amazing. Not only does it put me to sleep with the sound of rain, but it wakes me up with something called Warm Breeze. I don’t know. It’s glorious. So these days, as long as I set my alarm for 2 hours before I’m supposed to be up, I’m good.

What’s that all about? Well, it takes me 30 minutes of snooze, 30 minutes of lying in bed and thinking about getting up before I actually get out of bed. And, that’s being generous. Sometimes I hit snooze for an hour…oops!

It’s horrible. I am not a morning person. In fact, mornings are probably what I hate about the day the most. Mornings are for the birds, and I am not a bird. Birds are graceful, right? I am far from graceful. My husband says I sound like an elephant walking through the house. I’m only 5’3”. I shouldn’t sound like an elephant, ha ha!

So after I hit snooze from 6:30 until 7:30 (ha ha!!!) I am up, bleary eyed, moody and in desperate need for coffee. I am not a morning person. Mornings are for the birds. And I am not a bird. Nothing so graceful; my husband said I sound like an elephant walking through our house. I’m 5’3”. I shouldn’t sound like an elephant.

To sum up my morning: I am, A, always late; B, crabby until I get coffee pumping through my veins OR an energy drink; and, C, awkwardly heavy on my feet.

The in-between, a.k.a ~~ The Day Job: A necessary evil…

I have a pretty great day job. I’m a legal assistant for an attorney. And no, we don’t work with high profile cases and defend bad guys knocking people off in a mob hit. We do insurance litigation, school law and corporate law. One time this really scary guy came in with his drug dealer friends and asked if we’d represent him for First Degree Murder. Obviously, we didn’t take the case. I almost peed my pants just talking to them. I referred them to the phone book.

I have an office with a really great view. You wouldn’t believe the crazy things that happen in this town (we have a population of about 60,000, I think.) One day, I dazing off at the pretty tree across the street in front of the bank when about eight swat card screeched to a halt to surround the bank. Armed with assault rifles, shotguns and the whole shebang, they proceeded to order as man out of a dated, four door car (and not just any car, this baby was about as big as an LTD). Just so happened the driver was a kid. The poor thing couldn’t have been more than 16 years old! I am positive he probably peed his pants. I have no idea what the heck caused the cops to swarm like that, but after the kid’s parents were called, and an hour of nothing happening besides a thorough pat down, the cops left and the boy went home (shaking) with his father. Clearly, the police department was misinformed. Probably, there was a lot of paperwork involved. I tried to snoop online to find out what really happened, but the media didn’t cover it. I wish this town had a Gossip Girl. Things like that should be broadcast for entertainment.

I only work at the law office 4 hours a day. Yes! Only 4 now! I come home and work more than part time as a corporate transcriptionist, and I would love to do it full time so I never have to get out of my PJs, unless I decide to go to a coffee shop to write for a few hours. Really, I work a lot of hours. I have no idea how I find the time to write. I have two little kids who keep me busy and a husband who works 12 hour rotating shifts and isn’t around much to help. Phew! In my next life, I will have a cleaning lady and a cook. I swear.

How it all ends…

The best part of my day when I pick my kids up from school. They’re a crack-up, like their father. My son is seven and he’s on this kick about pets. Here’s just ONE of our conversations:

Little Guy: I want a garter snake

Me: Uh, I don’t think so.

Little Guy: Ugh, can I get a pet bat then?

Me: No. They have diseases.

Little Guy: Fine. I want a pet lion.

Me: We can’t afford to feed a lion.

Little Guy: Can’t I have ANYTHING? Do you even care about me???

Me: How about a nice fish?

Little Guy: A monkey is okay.

My daughter is a drama queen. She’s so much like me, it’s scary. Not only does she walk around the house singing her face off, but she’s also a goofball with a touch of sassy. She gets the goofball part from both me and my hubs. We like to call it good genes, ha ha!

I like to cook, so I am usually in the kitchen each evening making something that takes too long to prepare, turns my kitchen into a disaster zone, and usually with the end result of, “I’m not hungry, Mom!” Which results in us sitting at the table for an hour until they finish their food, and then another hour to clean up the mess that’s left behind.

You are asking yourself by now, “Holy hell, when does this lady actually write???”

I write i my car while I wait for my kids, I write in the evening after I put the munchkins to bed, and in the middle of the night when an idea strikes and I bolt upright in bed, turn on the lamp and startle my ancient laptop from Sleep mode. While it takes about three minutes (that might be an exaggeration) to turn on, I imagine opening a gift box with an Ultrabook inside, the kind that has instant-on. When I finally am able to open a Word document, I write until my eyes can’t take it and grudgingly fall to sleep. There are two things that really annoy me some days: 1, having to sleep is such a waste of time, period; and, 2, waking up because I have to be somewhere before 9:00 am. Ugh. Clearly, I should not work a day job. Ever. ha ha!

My life is not glamorous, but I’m okay with that 🙂 I have some amazing people I get to share my life with, and they all put up with my goofy side.

“You really should change that light bulb,” Matt said, glancing around us.

“I know.” I pushed aside my wallet to dig to the bottom of my oversized purse. “I kind of take for granted that this is supposed to be a safe neighborhood.”

“Until an alien abducts you off your poorly lit porch.”

“Very funny.” I glanced up from my purse with a smile. “But really, it’s late. You could have been home by now.”

“Gen, I’m glad to walk you to your door. I would have worried about you if I hadn’t.”

I considered him as we stood there on my porch, the light flickering above us. I didn’t want him to leave, but I didn’t know how to ask him to stay. Maybe I could ask him in for a drink, though I’d already had enough.

But I have those cupcakes…

Yeah. I could offer him cupcakes. They weren’t his favorite, chocolate with sprinkles, but yellow cake with milk chocolate frosting had to be a close second, right? Hadn’t he said a cupcake will fix everything?

“I’m really glad we went out tonight.” His voice made me jump and I dropped the keys. We both bent to pick them up at the same time and bumped foreheads.

“Sorry,” he said.

“It’s okay, I’m fine.” I clasped my forehead and laughed. Probably, I sounded hysterical. Like a rabid hyena. I couldn’t even look him in the eye when I took the keys from him. “Thanks for inviting me. I had a lot of fun tonight.”

“Me too,” he said.

I put the key into the lock, turning it slowly as I struggled with what to do about him and my out of control libido. Unlocking my door hadn’t given me enough time to figure things out, though, so I tried to prolong sliding the patio door open. That didn’t take long either, and I hesitated in the doorway, still unsure. I opened my mouth to ask him in, but nothing came out. So I stepped backward through the doorway, my gaze glued to his. After a moment, he followed me inside, part of his face lost in shadows.

Time stood still. My tongue darted out to lick my lips, and I lifted up onto my toes as he lowered his head to meet me halfway. The smell of his cologne surrounded me and my eyes drifted shut. He grasped me loosely around my back, pulling me close, sending shivers coursing through my body. His breath caressed my skin, his lips just a whisper away from mine, and my lips parted…

Once upon a time…

Bridal boutique owner, Alexis Gorecki, used to believe in happily-ever-afters—until prince charming turned into a toad.

Months after being blindsided by her own horrific wedding scandal, Lexie is desperately trying to keep her boutique afloat in the wake of all the bad publicity. Waging war against her evil almost-in-laws—the people who will stop at nothing to ruin her reputation—sounded much better in her head. Lexie’s strawberries and cream personality really isn’t cut out for taser guns and blackmail.

To complicate matters, Lexie’s first love is back in town with his sexy green eyes and out-of-control abs. He already broke her heart once before, the beast. Leo Moss has always been her weakness and he’s made it perfectly clear what he wants. Can he convince Lexie she’s not done with love just yet?

“Damn it, Lex, you keep pushing me away and it’s pissing me off.” He ran his hands through his hair. “I’m not going to fight over you with some guy who’s already gone.”

“Me pushing you away has nothing to do with Jeremy,” I said and crossed my arms. What I didn’t say was that it had everything to do with Leo, with our past, with me not wanting to get my heart broken again. Why couldn’t he understand that? Why couldn’t he read my mind and know all the questions I had about why he’d broken up with me the way he had, and why he was suddenly here, again, in my life, torturing me with feelings I didn’t want to have. Feelings that scared the hell out of me?

His face lowered, and suddenly his lips were near my ear lobe. I sucked in a breath. “Did he make you feel like this?” he whispered, and then his lips pressed softly against the sensitive skin of my neck. “Or this?” His lips captured my earlobe, a flicker of wet heat, and then it was gone, replaced by a draft of cold air seeping through the crack under the door. “Or this.”

His lips captured mine and stars exploded behind my closed eyes. Everything was warm, my entire body weightless and fuzzy. The kiss was slow; the heat of it felt all the way down to my toes. His tongue slid against mine in a silken kiss of passion that erupted inside of me.

About Niecey Roy

Niecey Roy knew she wanted to be a writer from a very young age, but her moment of enlightenment came after watching the movie You’ve Got Mail. It was then she realized her place in life, and happily parked her butt on writing romance. Her dream was to create sexy vixens, hunky, half-naked heroes, and above all, romance; lots and lots of butterflies in the belly, breathless first kisses and happily-ever-afters.

Most days she can be found at home at a cluttered desk, pounding her tired little fingers away on a keyboard with nothing but black pepper flavored sunflower seeds and Visine as her weapons for mass-romance-novel-creation. When her fingers need a break, you’ll find her at a table with friends, drinking a few martinis and showing off a new pair of (sometimes ridiculous) high heels. She’s usually the loudest at the table and most often the one snorting with laughter.

Niecey is the author of Fender Bender Blues, a contemporary romantic comedy published by The Wild Rose Press. Her new romantic comedy series, What’s Love??? includes Another Shot At Love, and Done With Love releasing April 2014.
