** WARNING!! DO NOT READ UNLESS YOU HAVE READ ‘THE ONE LEFT BEHIND’ **
I have been desperate for this book after the end of The One Left Behind left me hanging! Addison suddenly remembering her ex-fiance Colin, just as she was about to walk down the aisle to marry Pierce was not what I was expecting! So as soon as I got the ARC in my in-box I was excited, but also apprehensive at the same time. Because I have my guy already, the one I want Addison to choose, the one I think is better for her. Yes, that’s right, Team Pierce all the way baby!
We don’t always get what we want though do we? We have Pierce, waiting at the altar, ready to marry the love his life. We have Colin, who had the love of his life torn away from him, in a way that was hard for him to get over, because she hadn’t died, she was still there, but she didn’t remember him at all. Then we have Addison, who thought she wanted Pierce, but then in a cruel twist of fate regained her memories of Colin at the worst possible moment and now she doesn’t know what, or who she wants.
The story starts right where it finished in the first book, with Addison fleeing the church and everyone else left bewildered. Now she has a lot to deal with. Because not only did her memories of Colin return, her feelings for him did too. You might wonder how anyone can be in love with two people at the same time. Surely if you loved the first person enough then you wouldn’t fall in love with someone else would you? Well you can in Addison’s case, and that just makes things a whole lot harder for her. Now she has to work out who she can envisage a life with, who she can see herself growing old with. Is it Colin? Is it Pierce? Or is she better off cutting herself off from both off them and starting a new life without either of them?
I don’t want to say too much more incase I give away any spoilers, but I will say that my heart broke for Pierce. He’s had his heart broken in the past, but to be jilted on your wedding day? Devastating. Not only does he have to watch the woman he loves struggle to come to terms with regaining her memory, he also has to give her the space she needs, whilst knowing she may well be rekindling her relationship with Colin.
Rachel Lena and Jaime Nicole (the ladies who make up the two halves of Lena Nicole) did a fantastic job in bringing this story to its conclusion. They know how to do love triangles, how to tug on the heart strings, how to make you cry and they know how to write a steamy scene! I can’t wait to see what their next project will be!
She doesn’t mutter a word, she simply nods and that’s all the acknowledgment I need. Still cupping her jaw, I lean in and kiss her ever so softly, peppering her with small, slow kisses all over her mouth. I pull back for a fraction of a second to gauge her reaction and her eyes are still closed and she has a fistful of my shirt clenched in one hand. I snake one arm around the back of her waist and the other holding the back of her neck as I draw her close to me again, aligning our bodies perfectly against each other. Hearing her slight gasp spurs me on as I seal my lips over hers again. This time I’m not giving her soft pecks, and when she opens her mouth the tiniest bit, I take my tongue and run it along the inside of her lips. When her tongue reaches out to touch mine, I’m lost. I pour every ounce of passion, love, and devotion into this one kiss. I kiss her like my life depends on it. When I pull back, we are both breathless and there’s a fire in her eyes that I’ve missed seeing. I know exactly what her eyes are telling me, but unfortunately we can’t take it to that level tonight.
Hi ladies, thank you for taking the time to answer my questions.
I don’t want to keep you long, so I’ll get right to it!
How did you meet?
Nicole: Both our husbands are in the military and met through a course they were going through. We both had a child the same age and started doing play dates. Once we got to know each other and bonded over our love of reading, we became best friends.
Lena: Yep, that about sums it up.
Where did you get the idea of the book?
Nicole: It was a dream I had. I told my husband about it and he said I should write it, so I immediately called Lena to see if she wanted to embark on this journey with me. We always joked that we should write our own book and we finally went out and did it.
Lena: When she called me with her idea, I didn’t know she wanted me to be a part of it with her. I was so excited and started bouncing ideas around with her thinking that I would just help her with the brainstorming part of it. When she asked if I’d want to write it with her, I responded yes without hesitation.
Did you always know how the story would end/who Addison would choose or did it change as the story progressed?
Lena: Since it was initially Nicole’s vision, she always knew in her mind who Addison was meant to be with. Initially, I definitely had a difference of opinion, but once the story started progressing, I felt that Addison ended up with the person she was always meant for. So I have to give credit to Nicole and I’m glad we followed through with the way she envisioned the story. I couldn’t imagine it ending any other way.
Nicole: I knew how it would end but we always left room for the story to grow. It was hard because I was on one team and Lena was rooting for the other team. We wanted to make sure that in the end, everyone was who they were meant to be with and who made them a better person.
How do you manage to write a book while looking after young children! ?
Nicole: I usually squeeze mine in during nap time and I will send my chapter to Lena for her to go over.
Lena: Then I usually write at night once I put the kids to bed. Once I’m done, I send it back to Nicole for her to read. We do this every day until the story is complete. It’s a nice system we have working for us.
Who writes for which characters?
Nicole: It’s really a mixture of both. When we wrote The One Left Behind, I wrote Addison and Lena wrote Colin. When we got together for beta edits, we would do both characters together and changed what we felt was needed. In Shattered Lives Mended Hearts, we kept the same flow going. It was a challenge at times for me having to write Colin. Lena built his character in book 1 and I had to make sure he sounded the same and stayed true to his character. That was interesting but fun.
Lena: I ran into the same challenges in the second book as well. I wasn’t used to writing Pierce and wanted to make sure he sounded different from Colin and true to himself from the first book.
Thank you so much Lena and Nicole, It was great learning more about you!
