From the acclaimed bestselling author of Lost to You and When We Collide comes a new adult novel of one woman’s obsession: a man who’s as passionate as he is elusive—and as tempting as he is trouble…
Aleena Moore is haunted by Jared Holt. It’s been six years since she’s seen her brother’s best friend, the self-destructive bad boy she secretly loved in high school. As the years pass, she knows it’s time to move on. Time to decide between a practical nursing degree and her true dream as an artist. Time to get over Jared and give another guy a chance…
Just when she opens her heart to her friend Gabe, Aly returns home to find Jared sleeping on her couch. The teenage boy she loved has grown into a man she can’t resist. Covered in tattoos and lost in rage, he’s begging to be saved from his demons—the memories of the day he destroyed his family. As the two reconnect, their passion is hot enough to torch Aly’s judgment. But can she risk her future for a man who lives on the edge of destruction?

*I purchased this book from Amazon UK*
Oh how my heart broke for Jared in this book. He has experienced such a tragic event 6 years ago, one that has left him unable to believe he is worthy of anything. He is broken. He knows he can’t be fixed, he doesn’t want to be fixed, and he doesn’t want to get close to anyone. He thinks it’s his penance to go through life without a family, without friendship and without love.
I refused to ever love anyone again. I was done destroying the things that were important to me. It hurt too much when they were gone
He hadn’t reckoned on Aleena though.
Aleena is the kid sister of his childhood best friend. Through flashbacks we see how she tagged along with Jared and Christopher, how Jared always stuck up for her against her brother and how she idolised Jared. She hasn’t seen Jared since she was 14, but now here he is, back in town after 6 years and staying in the apartment she shares with her brother.
“Do you remember Jared Holt?”
The name was enough to knock the breath from my lungs.
Did I remember him?
When I looked back now, I wondered how it was possible for a heart to be broken at fourteen. But my heart had, because it’d broken for him.
Aly knows about the events that led up to him leaving town, although we don’t discover the reason until much later in the book. She tries to befriend him, to make him see that he doesn’t have to be alone, but Jared is quite hostile towards her at first. Gradually she is able to get him to talk to her and it’s clear that there is an underlying mutual attraction. Jared has been warned that Aly is strictly off-limits by Christopher, and is determined that he won’t ruin the good thing he has left in his life. He has a self destruct button and doesn’t want to bring Aly down with him, but he finds that he is fighting his feelings and finding it hard to do the right thing.
“I ruin everything I fucking touch, Aly, and I refuse to ruin you.”
Jared has a lot of demons he needs to overcome, and he will need to start to let people in if he’s going to be able to do that. There’s so much more of this story to be told, and I can’t wait for Come To Me Softly to see if Jared can work through his issues and confront those demons. I want to see him start to believe in himself, to believe that he can be (and deserves to be) happy.
If I believed in soul mates or any of that shit, I knew she was mine. I could feel it, this connection with her I couldn’t possibly share with anyone else. Like we fit, this fucked-up puzzle that made no sense until we aligned the pieces. But it wasn’t possible. I didn’t get the happy ending, and even if I could, I’d only ruin it.
I’ve read all of A L Jackson’s books, they all have the same effect on me. A L has a way of pulling the reader into the story and into the world of the characters. She creates characters that I care about, writes scenes that I can see happening as though I was standing there in the same room and I feel the emotion in her books. This story had it all. The emotion, the angst, the chemistry between the characters and their passion had me hooked from the very beginning until the very last page.
