Laney Walker is a quick witted, athletic, southern tomboy who lets few get too close, using her sarcastic zingers to deflect. She also has no idea how others view her, Evan having protected and coveted her since they were children. But college puts a gap between Laney and Evan that neither of them were prepared for- old relationships are tested, new ones are formed and nothing will ever be the same.

Especially when in walks one Dane Kendrick, not at all the familiar, southern charmer of home, but an animal all his own.

A story of growing up, friendship, loyalty, first love, primal love...and life.

Mature content.

REVIEWED BY JOANNE

*An e-book was provided to me by the author in exchange for an honest review.*

I really REALLY enjoyed this book. It had me hooked from the start.

I loved all the characters in the story, (well apart from one, for reasons which will become obvious later in the book) and I was thrilled to discover that there is going to be more from them in future books.

I loved Laney’s relationship with Evan, how they were so good together first as friends and then in a relationship. Evan has loved Laney for years, only plucking up the courage to tell her just before school ends. They have a fantastic summer together and then it all comes to end when they have to say goodbye to each other when they have to leave for separate colleges.

Laney starts her new college as a timid girl, unsure of her way in life, but soon makes a great set of friends in her co-ed dorm. Among those friends is Dane. Oh, how I loved Dane. Dane is very mysterious; with Laney wondering why he hangs around the dorms when he doesn’t go to the school, and what does he do during the day while they’re all at school? Laney feels drawn to Dane (and I must admit, so was I!) but she feels like she’s betraying Evan. She is torn between exploring new relationships and sticking to what she knows.

“I have no doubt that I love Evan, but am I in love with him?”

I didn’t want to like Dane, I felt as though I was betraying Evan by liking him, never mind Laney, but it was so damn hard not to! He was just as nice as Evan, but if I’m honest, maybe a little hotter, and also it could have been a case of out of sight out of mind, because Dane was there and Evan wasn’t.

I loved how Dane called Laney ‘Disney’; how he was patient and considerate with her, and just wanted to make her happy, but at the same time he was also trying to protect his own heart. He wanted to make sure that he wasn’t going to be left out in the cold if Laney chose Evan, and so held himself back until she had made her mind up.

“I won’t share you, Laney. Not your lips, not your thoughts, not your body, and especially not your heart. You don’t have to give it all to me just yet, but give me nothing if any of it belongs to him. Do you understand?”

In the end, I think Laney made the right choice, but I can’t help hoping the other guy gets his HEA too.

There were moments in this book where I laughed, sighed, fumed, and cried, and I can’t wait for the next book to see what happens next, especially after the way this one ended!
