A New Adult Romance from New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Kendall Ryan
Needing an escape from her past, Avery chooses a college where no one knows her. Keeping a low profile was the plan, falling for the intense frat boy, Jase wasn’t. Yet she can’t deny how alive she feels when he’s near. Even as common sense implores her to stay away, her body begs her to get closer.
Jase, numb from his own family drama, has grown bored with weekends fueled by nameless girls and countless bottles when he meets Avery. Helping her cope with her past is better than dealing with the bullshit his own life’s served up. Determined to drive away the painful secret she’s guarding, he appoints himself her life coach, and challenges her to new experiences. Getting close to her and being the one to make her smile are simply perks of the job.
But when Avery’s past boldly saunters in, refusing to be forgotten, can Jase live with the truth about the girl he’s fallen for?
Recommended for 17+ due to mature themes and sexual content.
This is the first book I’ve read by Kendall Ryan and I’ll definitely be reading more just as soon as I can.
The Impact of You was a sweet, emotional read about Avery, a girl with secrets she’d like to remain secrets, and Jase, a guy with a past that he’s trying hard to put behind him.
Avery has arrived at college determined to lay low and get on with her education. She has a secret and she would die if it got out around campus. She does not need a guy to be showing interest in her, or for her to feel attracted to him in return, and messing up her plans. Then she meets Jase at a party. He’s a guy with a reputation for being someone who sleeps around. Exactly the kind of guy Avery needs to stay away from. But then Avery gets to know Jase and they become friends. Jase can tell that Avery has secrets but has no idea what they are, all he knows is that he wants to help her over come her fears and eventually open up to him. Then they both start falling deeper and things get complicated …
I really liked this story. I did think it was similar to other NA stories in that there was a virginal female main character and a male main character who’s notorious for sleeping around. There was also the fact that Avery was hiding a secret, something else that’s been done before. BUT I did not feel when I was reading it that it was in any way a rip-off of other stories that I’ve read. Kendall Ryan had a way of making this fresh and entertaining and most of all she made me want to keep reading and get to know these two characters.
I felt so bad for Avery. One lapse in judgement on her part and she felt like her life was ruined. I have no idea how I’d have felt in the same situation when I was her age but I do know that it wasn’t her fault and she should not have had to close herself off like she did.
I liked Jase. He was sweet, hot, caring and trying hard to change. I did not like his “slip” back in to his old ways, or how he reacted when Avery’s secret came out, especially considering his past, he had a lot of nerve judging Avery for that! I do think he was a good guy, though, and i like to think that he reacted the way he did because he was hurt and hadn’t wanted to think about Avery like that unless it was with him. I don’t know.
There were a lot of misunderstandings, miscommunication, people trying to cause trouble and Avery and Jase had to find a way to overcome all of these things if they wanted to make it together. There were times when I was thinking ARGH just sort things out you two! SPEAK to each other and work things out! I HATED Stacia, what a scheming b*tch she was!
I loved the dual girl/guy POV, it’s fast becoming one of my favourite ways to read a story. I love getting inside the head of both characters and reading about how they’re feeling. I think Kendall Ryan did a great job of writing both Avery and Jase.
So, yeah, I really enjoyed The Impact of You, it’s a quick read and definitely one I’d recommend you pick up 🙂
