I had the perfect life.
Beautiful and loving husband.Three gorgeous little girls.
The only thing missing was the white picket fence. I really wanted that fence.
Three years ago, I lost that life. I lost my husband. And I lost myself. But, eventually, I found my way through the darkness. I’ve made peace with my new life. I have my girls, and that’s all that matters. They are my world. I have no illusions of ever falling in love again or getting whisked away on a white horse.
But then he came back into my life. On a freakin’ motorcycle.
There’s no way I’ll let him turn my life completely upside down. Absolutelyno way.
The question is…
How long can I keep pretending that I’m happy with my life being right-side up?
I LOVED Running on Empty! What a stunning debut from L.B. Simmons. This book made me laugh and cry in equal measures and I wish I could go back again and read it for the first time. I am definitely excited to read more of L.B.’s work in the future so hopefully she’s working like a busy bee and writing away as fast as her little fingers will allow!
Alex’s husband died 3 years ago, leaving her to raise their 3 girls alone. She’s not interested in finding love again, as far as she’s concerned she had the best love in the world with Derek and now it’s gone, along with Derek. She’s shut herself off and now concentrates on the hard task of raising the girls while holding down a full time job.
But then Blake, an old childhood friend, returns to town. Alex and Blake were on the verge of becoming more than just friends until Derek came along and now that Blake’s back old feelings are brought to the forefront of both of their minds. To make things worse, now everyone, including her mother-in-law, is interested in her love life and her moving on!
The writing in Running on Empty was just perfect. It was simple, easy to read, and flowed well. It had the perfect balance of both emotion and humour. I laughed until I choked at some points (look out for the toothpaste present from Alex’s kids!) and I cried with tears down my face at others. I loved the story – the simple idea of a grieving woman learning to love again – and how it played out, that too, like the writing, was just perfect.
The characters were realistic, believable and most of all relatable. I loved Harlow and I want to get myself a friend like her! She tells it like it is to everyone and anyone, no one escaped the Harlow Wisdom! Blake is a friend when Alex needs him, and eager to be more when she’s ready for it. He’s patient, dependable, and, most importantly, sexy as hell! Aex is a heartbroken, grieving mum who has to carry on for the sake of her kids and I think she is the perfect portrayal of a mum doing her best for her kids in those circumstances. The stars of the show, however, are Alex’s 3 kids, Nycole, Kyndall and Rylie. They are absolutely HILARIOUS! I can definitely see my own 3 kids in them, except mine are all boys.
