Only when you let go can you learn to live.
Between the death of her mother and pushing through law school without her best friend, it’s been a tough year for Becca. Needing a break from Boston, she moves to a tiny coastal North Carolina town for a relaxing summer. After bumping heads repeatedly with a local cop, she realizes her summer will be anything but quiet.
Three years after a career ending injury ruins his chance to play Major League Baseball, Gavin has a distrust of northerners and lately girls in general. He wants nothing to do with a girl who is only in town for the summer.
When the two give in to their impossible attraction, they realize that they may just have found the key to freeing themselves from the ghosts of their pasts.
Veer is a cute romance story about Becca, a law student from Boston and Gavin, a police officer living in Clayton Falls.
Becca is fiercely independent after growing up with just her mum after her dad abandoned them. Recently she’s nursed her sick mum, right up to her death from cancer. Now she’s all alone and feeling a little lost.
Gavin is an ex-baseball player turned police officer. His career ended after an injury. His previous relationship broke up at the same time; his girlfriend was fickle and wanted the fame and lifestyle more than she wanted him. He’s now wary of starting a relationship and finding love again.
Becca is Molly’s best friend. Molly is the main character in the first Clayton Falls book, Derailed. Gavin is the guy who liked Molly in Derailed, making a bit of a love triangle between Molly, Ben and himself.
I liked Gavin. He acted like an arse towards Becca a couple of times, due to feeling he needed to protect himself from history repeating, but mostly he was a perfect gentleman towards her. He treated her right and gave her time and space when she needed it.
I thought Becca blew hot and cold. One minute she was all in to their relationship and the next she was backing right off and running away. I get that she’d seen things go bad for her parents and she had no previous relationship experience but it did make me feel frustrated with her. Plus as we later learn she’d had something traumatic happen in her past, maybe that made her wary too.
I liked the fact that it was set in a small town and that meant that news travelled fast and everyone knew everyone else’s business. It meant that there was always someone who could talk sense in to Gavin and Becca. There was always someone on their side rooting for them to sort things out.
I liked the cast of supporting characters but Matt Morgan not so much! I liked that we got to see how Molly and Ben were getting on, since the events in Veer happened after the events in Derailed. I loved Kelly, she just tells it like it is and has Tom well trained in the art of being a good husband! I liked Jake and look forward to reading his story. I also really liked Gail, she’s a very cool older lady who always has pearls of wisdom and life experience to share.
There were a couple of things that I felt were left unresolved. One was Becca’s dad’s phone message. Maybe the point of her not calling him back was that she didn’t need him in her life and that was that. I just expected there to be more in that. The second one was the whole conversation Becca had with Gavin’s mum, and then her subsequent argument with Gavin. She never explained to him after they made up what she was feeling. I feel like they should have talked about that before moving on to try for their happy ever after.
In general though, I did enjoy reading Veer. It was a sweet love story about 2 people who needed someone in their life who was going to be a constant presence, since both characters had had too much of a change happen to them. I definitely recommend that you read it.
