When you’re lost sometimes the only place you can go is home.
Broken over the death of her fiancé, Molly leaves law school to return to her childhood home in North Carolina. Expecting to lay low until she can figure out what else to do with her life, Molly finds herself in the arms of her high school sweetheart Ben, the boy who represents everything from the past she tried to leave behind.
Looking for an escape, what she finds is a way back to the girl she almost forgot existed and a future she never dreamed possible.
In Derailed we meet Molly, a 23 year old student at law school who’s had, and is still having, a tough time in life. Her fiance has recently died and to say she’s not coping too well is an understatement.
In the opening pages Molly quits law school in Boston and decides to go home to North Carolina to work out her options and decide what to do now. She knows that returning home for the first time in 5 years will be hard, especially since Clayton Falls is such a small community. What she isn’t counting on is running in to her first love, Ben, the guy who’s heart she broke when she left, pretty much straight away.
It’s clear Ben never got over her. The problem is Molly can’t let herself be close to anyone else after Adam’s death. Being close to her makes bad things happen to people. Molly spends her days and nights wracked with guilt and drinking to drown her sorrows. But then she decides to let Ben in to her screwed up world, on her terms …
Can she let herself get close to someone again?
Can she and Ben get back to where they were before it all went wrong?
Can she find closure on the guilt that’s plagued her for the last 5 years?
I liked Derailed but I didn’t think WOW about it. I kinda felt like things were resolved really quickly. Like, Molly let Ben back in to her life really quickly. She was fast to jump back in to a relationship with him. I know they already had a history so that made things easier but she was grieving and carrying around a huge feeling of guilt and then she just seemed able to move on. I think the reason for this may have been that seeing Ben again after 5 years made Molly realise her mistake, plus she could be herself around him, meaning she could open up to him.
There was a love triangle in Derailed and I wasn’t keen on this. I didn’t think it served much of a purpose except maybe to introduce us to Gavin for when people read his story, Veer, that’s just been released.
I haven’t read any of Alyssa Rose Ivy’s other books but I will definitely give them a try in the future. I think the reason I didn’t love Derailed and just liked it could be to do with the fact that I recently read another book that was very similar, I Love You to Death by Natalie Ward. That book was much darker, made me feel more emotion, and just drew me in more. It might be an unfair comparison and I might have felt differently about Derailed if I hadn’t read I Love You to Death just before. That’s why I’m not giving up on reading more of Alyssa Rose Ivy’s work. I enjoyed reading her style of writing.
You should definitely give Derailed a try if you like contemporary romance stories that aren’t straight forward hearts and flowers stories. Derailed has the potential to have you shedding a tear or two so have some tissues ready.
Alyssa Rose Ivy is a Young Adult and New Adult author who loves to weave stories with romance and a southern setting.
