Avenge is the second book of The Patronus series and since I’d not read the first book, Awaken, Sarah was kind enough to send me that too!
I have reviews of both books and a giveaway.
Lucy Donovan was supposed to have a weekend of fun in the sun, celebrating her upcoming graduation from college. In a split second, everything changed. A drunk driver ended Lucy’s mortal life.
Lucy opens her eyes to a world she never imagined possible and a new destiny: as a Patronus, a guardian of spirits. Adjusting to her new role and abilities while negotiating this confusing realm will test her limits and push her further than she ever dreamed she would go. From wayward spirits who don’t want her help to soul stealing vampires, and even a stuck-up British royal, Lucy must brave them all to save one spirit she can’t bear to lose.
Further complicating her life is an inexplicable yet growing connection she feels to a member of her team, Max, whose mysterious behavior leaves her both confused and intrigued.
Waking up dead was just the beginning of her problems. Lucy’s death is about to become the greatest adventure of her life.
In Awaken you’re thrown straight in to things when the main character, Lucy dies on the first page! It’s quite an introduction to the story!
I loved Awaken. For me it was one of those books that I just wanted to keep reading because I was just so engrossed in reading about Lucy and her new (after)-life. There was always something happening, a lot of action, and I just didn’t want to be left hanging to find out what
What I liked is that the author really took her time to set up the story. We got lots of detail about Lucy’s new world, the people she met who were to be her new friends and her work team and also about Lucy’s role in all of this. It was really interesting to read the author’s take on all things related to the after-life in Awaken. It’s not something that I can recall reading about in a boom before and I enjoyed it.
I loved Lucy. She was so strong-minded and handled everything that was thrown at her so well. She did have the occasional wobble and maybe wasn’t so strong in those moments but without throwing a spoiler out there I think those wobble moments were justified.
Max was the love interest in Awaken and he was just a sweetheart. Completely devoted to Lucy pretty much from the moment she recovered from her death and woke up as a Patronus. I could totally see why Lucy would feel so strongly for him so quickly, even if it wasn’t for the other connection they had.
Some of the things that happened to Lucy in Awaken were C.R.E.E.P.Y!!! Yikes, when a certain something happened about a quarter of the way through I was nibbling away at my nails wondering what the hell was going to happen to her and what the outcome would be!
So, all in all I really loved Awaken. It had great characters, great story, romance, action, and an original (for me anyway based on what I’ve read before) take on after-life. It was well written and has made me eager to read more of Sarah M. Ross’ work in the future, which actually brings me on to my next review …
Six months ago, Lucy Donovan thought that being killed by a drunk driver was the worst thing that could happen to her.
She was wrong.
Part of a new team with enhanced powers, Lucy and her friends begin a quest to avenge the souls that have been stolen. Enemies of the Patronus have united however, and a spy from within the Patronus realm is feeding the enemy their every move.
Now, the person she loves most has been ripped away from her, soul held hostage, and Lucy has vowed to stop at nothing to get it back.
When a mission goes horribly wrong, Lucy’s soul becomes compromised. It will take a strength she didn’t know was within her to escape the darkness, return to the light and avenge the soul she loves.
At the end of Awaken something bad happened and a soul was stolen. A soul that was linked to Lucy. Now in Avenge she’ll stop and nothing to get it back and send it to its rightful place. The team don’t have it easy though as there is a spy in their realm who’s feeding information to the vampire enemies.
I loved Avenge just as much as Awaken. I did think that Avenge was darker and even creepier in some parts than Awaken, but that was good as the vampires had more of a starring role this time, so I wouldn’t expect anything less than creepy
Lucy had a lot to deal with in this second book. She went through hell at the hands of the vampires and had to deal with the loss of the stolen soul and also someone else she cared for coming to harm. We got to see Lucy’s dark side this time and how she dealt with those dark emotions that she found herself experiencing after Max’s disappearance.
The group don’t have a clue who they can trust with a spy in their midst and that causes a lot of stress for everyone. I actually worked out who the spy was, just by guesswork – I had no idea why the spy would be who it was, I’m not that good a detective!
I thought the writing was just as good as that of Awaken and the story had me even more hooked in the second book. I have finished it within 24 hours of starting it. Now it’s not a long book so that’s probably nothing remarkable to read it in 24 hours but when you’re busy running around after 3 little boys it can get hard to slot in reading time sometimes. I just had to go back to reading whenever I could.
I saw at the end of Avenge that there will anothee story in this series, this time coming from the POV of James, the leader of Lucy’s Patronus group. I can’t wait for that and I’ll definitely be reading it. I definitely count myself as a fan of Sarah M. Ross and The Patronus series.
