Welcome to my stop on the Going Under by Georgia Cates Tour which is hosted by AToMR
I have a review that I can’t wait to share and also a giveaway for you.
I first read Going Under back in May or June and I loved it. When I found out that there was a tour for Going Under and the second book in the series, Shallow, I jumped at the opportunity to be involved with it. It was fun re-reading Going Under and I loved reading Shallow, both are amazing. Stop by on Thursday next week for my Shallow review.
TITLE: Going Under

GENRE: YA Contemporary Romance
PUBLISHED: March 2012

Jessie Boone is a self proclaimed bad boy and doesn’t march to the beat of anyone’s drum, but his own. Growing up in less than desirable circumstances has made him no stranger to the hard knock life and his determination to leave it behind is fierce. When he finds himself transferred to East Franklin High School, he sees his opportunity to use his athletic ability to snag a college football scholarship, but Forbes Henderson, the player Jessie means to replace isn’t giving up his spot willingly. In fact, Forbes is willing to go to extreme measures to retain his place as first string quarterback. When Forbes’ malicious plan to injure his replacement fails, Jessie is furious and determined to show him he messed with the wrong person; not only is he going to take the position of first string quarterback, he’s going to take his girl, too.
Claire Deveraux is perfection at it’s best. She is beautiful, intelligent and unaware she just became Jessie Boone’s conquest as revenge against her boyfriend, Forbes Henderson. Like her flawless performance as the perfect daughter and student, Claire’s production of being the perfect girlfriend has everyone fooled, except Jessie Boone, and she fears this tattooed bad boy will see her secret desire to explore his crude threats and promises to rock her perfect world. If she decides to give in to one uninhibited moment with Jessie, will she learn too late that it was all an act of vengeance or will Jessie learn the taste of first love is sweeter than that of revenge?
Claire is a seemingly perfect person. Perfect daughter, perfect girlfriend. perfect student. She’s not happy with that though and would love to break free of everyone’s expectations of her and be a little wild. She’s the darling of East Franklin High and the girlfriend of the football team’s star player.
Jessie grew up in the bad part of town. His mother couldn’t have cared less about him and the same applies for his grandmother that he now lives with. Jessie has seen and been through a lot of crap in his life. His transfer to East Franklin High for his senior year is a lifeline for him. If he makes it on the football team there’s a chance he’ll get a full scholarship to college, meaning he can get the hell out of Collinsville and away from his dangerous lifestyle.
Jessie and Claire clash from the start. She’s the girlfriend of Jessie’s new enemy, Forbes Henderson. Jessie plans to get at Forbes by using Claire. Claire knows that to keep on Forbes’ good side she should stay away from Jessie. The thing is she can’t seem to. Without knowing Jessie’s plan to use her she forms her own plan to teach him a lesson about not messing with her. The only problem is that it’s soon not a game for either of them, the attraction they both feel is undeniable, and fighting it seems to be the most difficult thing in the world. They’re completely different people, their social classes don’t mix. they’ll never be accepted, and is Jessie’s dangerous way of life one that Claire should be getting involved in?
I really enjoyed Going Under the first time I read it and I loved it even more this time on the second read. I’m reading a lot of new-to-me authors this year and Georgia Cates is one of them. She’s also an author I’ll definitely be reading more of.
Going Under is about love conquering all and the lengths people will go to in order to be together. For Claire and Jessie this meant the disapproval of Claire’s parents, battling against shitty circumstances and fighting back against narrow-minded judgements due to their different social standings.
Georgia Cates definitely knows how to write characters that you just can’t help but love. Jessie is a sweet, loyal, determined guy with a tough, bad boy exterior. My heart ached for him as details of his past were revealed, and even his present wasn’t anything special either. He didn’t see that as a reason to give up though, or just accept it and be like everyone else around him. He wanted to make things better for himself and he had the drive to do that. Claire was a generous, sweet girl who was aware of her privileged life and tried to use that to help others. She didn’t care less where Jessie was from, all she knew was that she loved him regardless. Stories of good/rich girl meets bad/poor boy are very common in YA books so this wasn’t a new concept BUT it was done so amazingly well that I didn’t feel like I was reading the same old story.
The scenes in the library cupboard were hot! Haha! Those sorts of scenes are always welcome in a book I’m reading!
There’s a scene towards the end of the book that made my heart jump in to my mouth and had me pulling faces along the lines of “Oh, crap!” I almost didn’t want to carry on reading so I couldn’t find out that something bad had happened! I did carry on though and the ending was perfect, just how it should have been.
If you want a sweet love story with likeable, well written and developed characters then Going Under is for you. I highly recommend it.
A well deserved 5/5
Both end 9th October. Good luck 🙂
