COVER REVEAL + REVIEW + GIVEAWAY – I Loved You First by Reena Jacobs

August 2, 2012 Cover Reveal, Review 22

OK, so here I am AGAIN with another cover reveal, the fourth this week! A record for me! I also have a review and giveaway!

I Loved You First, by Reena Jacobs, was released a year ago and, as an anniversary celebration, it has a new cover …

Here’s what I Loved You First is all about …

Alexandria (Alex) Carmichael guards two secrets close to her heart. One―she’s in love with her best friend, Seth. Two―he’s gay.
As a freshman in college, Alex looks forward to fun times with her best friend. When Seth decides cycling through girlfriends is the way to fit in with the straight crowd, Alex must make a choice: watch Seth give his affection to another while her heart breaks or come clean with her feelings and risk losing his friendship forever.

I LOVED YOU FIRST is a new adult love story told through the eyes of Alex, an African-American/Caucasian student, who takes a journey of self-discovery while watching her best friend come to terms with his sexuality.

My Review:

I received my eBook copy of I Loved You first from the author as part of the blog tour to celebrate the first anniversary of its release. I had never heard of it before but I was intrigued to read it because of the LGBT storyline, it’s not something that I have come across before in any book I’ve read.

I enjoyed reading ILYF. I thought it was probably quite an accurate portrayal of how a gay young man, in this case Seth, would feel about being gay within a college environment and not knowing how he might be accepted. I didn’t like Seth’s character too much though. I thought he took advantage of Alex and her unwavering loyalty to him. He was kind of pushy and was used to getting his own way with Alex. He wasn’t always very nice to her either and yet she’d always still be there for him. I can see though that he was under an enormous pressure to conform which may have shaped his personality and the way he was with Alex. Seth was in to sports and since he knew the prejudices of gay people in sport he felt he just had to keep quiet about his sexuality.

I liked Alex’s character. She grew as a person over the course of the story. She started off as just Seth’s sidekick, there to help him keep his secret, and she accepted that role due to how she felt about him. As things progressed, partly down to her friendship with Trinity, she came to realise there was more to her than that and she deserved better than that. She learnt that she had to start to love herself as that’s the most important thing.

I thought ILYF was well written and had a good pace. I look forward to reading more of Reena’s work in future.

I know this is an oldie, but it’s also a goodie. 🙂 The Anne of Green Gables series. I’m not one to reread books, but I can’t get enough of Anne Shirley. Unfortunately, I can’t even get my family to watch the TV series with me. Yes… I have the collection.

  2. Veronika

I’ve read a lots of books, but I don’t really re-read them, I don’t know why. I think the only series I kept re-reading was the Twilight books years ago. I loved them 🙂

  3. Kelly

Recently I’ve re-read Angel and Angel Fire by L.A. Weatherly. I love the series and i can’t wait for Angel Fever to be released next year. I love the whole angels are the baddies idea and the relationship between Alex and Willow.

I’m a HUGE re-reader, so my list is long. My YA list includes Harry Potter (all of them) Twilight (yep, all of them too) and Cassie Claire’s MI and ID series. I also have been known to re-read books before the next in a series comes out. I still I find time to pick up new reads too. *sigh* 😉

  5. Carrie M

I rarely re-read books but I have read a few of the Janet Evanovich Stephanie Plum books more than once. It is such fun reading and I wanted to re-read the first book before watching the movie One For the Money(which did not do the book justice)

Yesterday I was telling my husband how much I needed the books on my bookshelf (even though I haven’t touched some of them for a decade). I’m like a lot of you when it comes to refreshing my memory about past books in a sequel. I find myself taking the books down just to skim… usually not re-read, but definitely a quick perusal through.

  7. Sophia Rose

I’ve read the first three Mortal Instrument books twice. I re-read books all the time.

  8. Sarika Patkotwar

The one book I keep reasing again and again is Harry Potter. But when it comes to YA, I have such a huge TBR pile already, that I don’t really indulge in re-reading! 🙂

I can’t think of any YA books but I’ve reread the Harry Potter series at least 3 times! lol

  10. Helen

The L.J. Smith series especially now that the shows are on the CW I like to reread the books to see the differences

  11. Fiona N

I used to read Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte more than 5 times because I love it 🙂

I can’t believe how often Harry Potter has been mentioned. 🙂 Like the world, I’ve watched the movies, but I had no idea the books were so full of awe! They’re on my bookshelf. Guess I need to pull them down!

Thank you for the wonderful review and featuring me on your blog, Kelly.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to leave a comment, and thanks to Reena for giving everyone the opportunity to win such great prizes.

I completely forgot about re-reading Harry Potter! When I was pregnant with my first son, this time 7 years ago, I would sit in the rocking chair in the nursery we had ready for him and just read and read to pass all the free time I had. Harry Potter was at the top of my list. I’m hoping for a hardback box set of the series for my birthday.
